Names

Having finished the first layer of clouds, I began on the next. I have become quite proficient at my work. Before I simply wove the ground and the clouds together. However, now each cloud is precisely crafted for its purpose. By listening to the mortals that live here I have learned of their specific wants and needs.

Crop field clouds differ from walkway clouds which differ from building clouds. I have also obtained many more names. Though still not an official one. The first name I got here, Miko, comes from the land below us. It means one who has devoted themselves to the gods.

Recently, I feel I have devoted myself to this work, rather than my creators. I have been so engrossed with weaving that I notice little else. My creator’s land extends from horizon to horizon and now has three layers resting on top of each other. Most of it is farmland, but it is a respectable city, and only the lowest layer is all-encompassing. No matter which layer you live on you can see the peak.

Day after day I continuously weave more clouds to expand their domain. Occasionally, I deal with the problems the mortals have. They are tedious, right now I am altering a cloud stream to run down to and up from the ocean. This will allow ships to sail up to this city increasing the rate at which it grows.

My concentration wavers and the stream dissolves. These last few months I have felt an intense gaze directed at me on occasion. Unfortunately, when I try to locate its source, it vanishes.

My personal delusion is that it is my creators, finally taking note of all I have done for them. More likely, it is worshipers trying to ask for something new. My work is fulfilling. Still, I cannot help but seek the recognition of my creators. I want them to look upon me and truly see me.

It took almost a year but the river to the sea is complete. I had to rip a leyline from the ground but it made the work much easier. Then the people asked for a path down, so I showed them how to catch the wind and float. Trade has boomed. The crops grown from the clouds are rich in prana and are thus highly desired by the rest of the world.

This city which has covered the entire mountain range can grow no more. It has reached the limits of their influence. Though I still weave clouds constantly. There is no end to the mortals’ desires. Larger and more intricate buildings, replacement farmland, vehicles that can catch the wind. These requests take more time and effort than normal clouds. It has given me plenty to do.

After a while, my wish was proven true. The intense gaze that was directed at me was my creators. They would stand at the edge of their plateau and gaze out at everything. When their gaze swept over me its intensity made me think they were specifically looking at me.
